Star Trek Into Darkness (J.J. Abrams, 2013)

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. –John 15:13

It is what it is. It’s Star Trek so it has a certain fanbase it has to appeal to. Abrams does a nice job using a wide color palette to bring this world to life, using elaborate colorful settings as well as intricately placed lighting throughout the set pieces that helped create an endless number of vibrant lens flares with every movement of the camera. But that is where the strengths end. Everything else is your average modern sci-fi/action starting with the opening action sequence to get our hearts pumping, the hero falling out of good graces, and the ultra dramatic (but still safe) finale. If they would have shocked the world and left off the final resolution, I would have been singing this film’s praises for such boldness. As it is, there is nothing here from a storytelling standpoint that hasn’t been done a hundred times. But it’s fun, it looks cool, so it’s not bad.  7/10
