Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Rob Marshall, 2011)

What can I say about this movie? It’s just incredibly average. It is slightly better than the second and third installments in this series. Much of the CGI has been abandoned (but not in full obviously) so it definitely feels a bit more like an older, more authentic adventure film. And the addition of Ian McShane as Blackbeard is a plus as he alongside Depp make a very solid acting pair. Much of the magic, atmosphere, and intensity of the first of the Pirates movies is still absent – nothing seems quite as serious or distraught as moments of the original do. But it’s still fun and really its simplicity (mostly in plot) is a warm welcome at this point in the saga.  6.25/10
