Bambi (Hand, 1942)
I was born and raised a Disney child and I never have grown out of it. Despite this, it has been a while since I’ve seen almost all of the classic animated Disney movies I grew up with. So I have decided I want to watch them all again – in order of release. When I finish, I will rank them all, and hand out my number scores from there.
I’m sure rabbit lovers everywhere will disagree with me, but childhood Thumper might be the most annoying Disney character I’ve seen. He’s obviously around to be a sort of Jiminy Cricket or Timothy Mouse type character, but where those two were grounding presences in their respective main character’s life, Thumper just makes fun of Bambi, and is completely unfunny in doing so. As for my thoughts on the film, Bambi feels very rushed and more life lesson-esque than any of its predecessors, which is really all that keeps this out of the ‘elite’ category.
This film might feature one of the most underrated musical scenes in a Disney film. The song Little April Shower plays during Bambi’s first rain. The light, melodic music matches the calm rainfall perfectly, and the song is accompanied by a visual depiction of the forest animals all peacefully finding shelter. It’s a great scene. Bambi also features fantastic animation. From the changing forest scenery of the seasons to the climatic forest fire, the colors used throughout are amazing. 7.5/10
