I Am Legend (Francis Lawrence, 2007)

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I’m definitely not a Will Smith fan, and just reading the plot would have led me to believe I wouldn’t like this. But there’s a heck of a lot of good stuff going on in the first two-thirds of this movie. Basically, it’s just Will Smith’s character wandering around a post-apocalyptic New York. He hangs out with his dog, rents movies from a store full of mannequins (and has conversations with them), and hides from insane infected human-like creatures. It really dives into a lot of interesting themes such as isolation, loneliness, and survival. Unfortunately, much of that is dropped as the last third of the film is full of contrivances and typical Hollywood action/thriller plot devices. It’s too bad because this could have been really great.  7/10
