Adoration (Egoyan, 2008)

Adoration (Atom Egoyan, 2008)

Yesterday was my birthday and when all other plans failed we decided to rent a movie – my choice! Unfortunately the pressure was too much and my choice wasn’t as successful as I had hoped. I’ve only seen one other Egoyan film and I loved it, though this was not near the experience that was.

The film is about a young man who tells the story of how prior to his birth his father was a terrorist and nearly blew up a plane. At the start of the film, we are trying to piece this together as it’s not clear whether this is the truth or not. Outside of the story itself, there was also an element of mystery with the way the film unfolded (jumping from present to past to future, etc.) and the ambiguity of the characters. It begins to go downhill as we learn who is who and what is actually going on. And additionally, Egoyan unleashes a ‘please don’t be intolerant’, heavy-handed message. So while it wasn’t a bad film, I would have rather seen something else.  6.75/10

  1. Sorry babe – but as you said it was your choice! I agree that it started off stronger than it finished, it would have been an interesting idea if it had played out as it started.

  2. Which Egoyan film did you enjoy?

  3. The Sweet Hereafter?
