Alien (R. Scott, 1979)

Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979)

I re-watched this movie the other night and I think I liked it a bit more this time around. Its simplicity is its key. It’s about a commercial space crew who stumble upon a seemingly inactive alien ship. One of the members gets latched on to, and brings the creature aboard. Things take a turn for the worse, and the alien ends up being more destructive than it seemed. Much of the film is spent with the crew members as they argue about wages, share meals together, and throw one-line insults back and forth. I’m not sure there’s actually any alien action until 1/3rd of the way through. But even when the suspense and action does pick up, it feels extremely real. The crew is dealing with one problem throughout the entire film, and that one problem is enough to hold viewer interest. I enjoyed this entertaining flick, and its consistent tone and simple storyline are big pluses.  7.5/10
