Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices (Werner Herzog, 1995)

Compared to Gasherbrum, this film was much better, though still not up there with Herzog’s best. In this, though, the subject matter is interesting, and the people Herzog finds for his interviews are hilarious. Most of them seem to be spouting things about Gesualdo that seem completely off-base. Yet Herzog lets them ramble and we’re left to determine whether we believe what they say. The people who seem the most knowledgeable about Gesualdo are the least interesting to watch, which is where this film falters a bit. It would have been great if it was just a bunch of weirdos giving nonsensical thoughts about the man, while the camera panned through Gesualdo’s old residencies.  7/10
