Gasherbrum: The Dark Glow of the Mountains (Herzog, 1985)

Gasherbrum: The Dark Glow of the Mountains (Werner Herzog, 1985)

What we have here is a short documentary by Werner Herzog about two mountain climbers looking to scale both Gasherbrum mountains. Unfortunately, this barely feels like a Herzog documentary. There are no wild eccentricies or uncomfortable/awkward camera lingers like I have come to expect. Instead, the film features a large amount of talking head information, little of which is very interesting. It truly felt like an average hour-long television special that anyone could have made. The saving graces are the music by Herzog regulars – Popul Vuh – who are always great, and the occasional pretty shot of the landscape. Still, this is the worst I’ve seen from Herzog.  5/10
