Wendy and Lucy (Reichardt, 2008)

Wendy and Lucy (Kelly Reichardt, 2008)

Kelly Reichardt makes nothing but good films. One of her strengths in the past has been her eye for beautiful images. Wendy and Lucy is a bit more plain from a cinematography standpoint, though still very good in a less beautiful way, and more of a mood-setting way. Overall, that is probably the only thing that keeps this from being my favorite from her. The story is simple yet involving. It feels like a chapter out of a bigger story, which keeps it from feeling rushed in any way. Reichardt creates characters who are completely real both in what they do and how they go about doing it. The security guard who befriends Wendy was an amazing character with about as kind and pure of heart as you’ll see. It’s worth seeing the movie just to watch him. Overall, an impressive film.  8.5/10
